Tupilak

guardian · Greenland · Arctic

The Tupilaq (tupilait pl.) is an Inuit (Greenland) avenging monster fabricated by an angakkuq (shaman) from animal parts (bone, skin, hair, sinew) and sometimes human remains, given life by ritual chants. Sent into the sea to destroy a specific enemy. Risky: if the target has greater magical power, the tupilaq rebounds to kill its maker—only public confession neutralizes it.
