Turtle Animal-Spirit of Kwakiutl
Not attested: the turtle plays no part in Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) animal-spirit tradition. Their ancestor and crest beings descend from mask-removing animals such as the Seagull, Sun, Grizzly Bear and Thunderbird, and their sea spirits include Kumugwe, Sisiutl and the fish-faced Pugwis. Sea turtles are absent from their coastal myth and art.
