Turtle
Turtle is a crucial animal spirit in Arapaho creation mythology. In the Flat Pipe creation story, various animals dove into the primordial waters to bring up mud—Grebe, waterfowls, Kingfisher, Otter, Beaver, Coot, Garter Snake, Black Snake, ducks, goose, crane—all failed. On the seventh dive, Turtle (along with the Creator transformed into a Red-headed Duck) succeeded in bringing up mud, which the Creator cast in four directions to form the Earth. Turtle's success made the creation of the world possible. In many Plains cultures, Turtle is honored for its role in the earth-diver creation myth
