Not independently attested as a turtle ghost or ocean-guardian in Aztec folklore. No Aztec source records a spectral turtle haunting rivers. The nearest genuine figures are Cipactli and Teocipactli, primeval earth-monsters sometimes shown as crocodilian or caiman-like beings on whose back the earth rests, and the turtle-linked earth-support motif in Mesoamerican cosmography.
