Turtle Giant of Dogon
In Dogon cosmology the turtle carries an ancient significance tied to the structure of the world. Marcel Griaule recorded a Dogon conception in which the hexagonal plates of the turtle's shell mirror the sacred layout of the cosmos, and secondary retellings picture the earth on the back of a giant turtle beneath a sky held by four pillars.
