Turtle Guardian of Haida

guardian · Canada · North America

Not attested in Haida mythology or documented Northwest Coast sources: no turtle guardian figure appears in Haida oral tradition, clan crests or totem-pole art. Haida society is organized around the Raven and Eagle moieties, whose crests include bear, wolf, killer whale, halibut and frog rather than a turtle. The record appears derived from the Turtle Island motif of other Indigenous nations.
