Turtle Trickster of Ashanti

trickster · Ghana · West Africa

Not independently attested as a central Ashanti trickster. In Akan tradition the trickster par excellence is Anansi, the spider, who wins the stories from the sky god Nyame; tortoise figures appear in some Akan tales but hold no such role. The tortoise-as-trickster is the classic figure of Yoruba and Igbo folklore in Nigeria, suggesting this entry conflates Anansi with the West African tortoise.
