Tussepresten

Tussepresten (the tusse priest) is a unique figure in Setesdal folklore — the priest of the underjordiske (tusser/hidden people). According to Setesdal tradition, the tusser were not purely pagan but had their own Christian-like religion with their own priest who held rival church services in the valley. The Tusseprest competed with the human priest of Valle church for the souls of the valley. If the human priest rang the church bells too early or too late, the Tusseprest would steal the prayers of the congregation. The Tusseprest held services inside mountains, where the tusser worshipped. Hu
