Uktena

mythical-serpent · United States · North America

The Uktena is the great horned serpent of Cherokee tradition, its body thick as a tree trunk, with glistening scales, branching horns, and a single blazing crystal, Ulûñsû'tï ('Transparent'), on its forehead. Invulnerable save at the seventh spot from its head, it hides in deep pools and lonely mountain passes; the Little People once changed a man into such a snake to kill the angry Sun.
