Den danske varulv (the Danish werewolf) has a unique origin not found in other countries: if a pregnant woman crawls through a horse's afterbirth to ease her labor pains, a son will become a werewolf and a daughter will become a mare (nightmare spirit). The Danish varulv is always male and transforms at sunset, his human soul replaced by a wolf's savage nature. Unlike continental werewolves, the Danish varulv does not require a full moon or a wolfskin belt — the curse is carried in the blood from birth.
