Den svenska varulven (the Swedish werewolf) differs from continental European werewolf legends in several ways. Swedish varulvar were often not voluntary shapeshifters but people born under a curse — those born with a 'vargbälte' (wolf belt, a caul) were doomed to become werewolves. Alternately, a person could become a varulv by putting on a wolfskin belt or reciting certain formulas. Unlike the uncontrollable ravaging werewolf of continental folklore, the Swedish varulv often retained human reason and could be bargained with.
