Vette (feminine: vetta, plural: vetter, from Old Norse vættr meaning wight/spirit) is a general term in Norwegian folklore for nature spirits and supernatural beings. The vetter are guardian spirits of specific natural places - forests, lakes, rivers, mountains, rocks, and farm buildings. The concept is related to the Old Norse landvættir (land spirits) who protected the land itself. In Norwegian folk belief, every place had its own vette - the skogsvette (forest spirit), vannvette (water spirit), fjellvette (mountain spirit), and husvette (house spirit).
