Wakan Tanka (Great Mystery or Great Spirit) is the supreme sacred power in Lakota religion, the unified totality of all that is mysterious, powerful, and sacred. Unlike a personified deity in Western traditions, Wakan Tanka is better understood as the sum of all wakan (sacred) forces that permeate the universe.
