Wamala is the god of the underworld in Ganda mythology, the third of three powerful divine brothers alongside Mukasa (lake god) and Kibuka (war god). Wamala rules the realm of the dead, a watery underworld beneath Lake Victoria. While Mukasa governs surface waters and life-giving bounty, Wamala rules the dark depths and spirits of the departed. The Baganda believe that when a person dies, their spirit journeys to Wamala's underwater realm to join the ancestors. Wamala is a just but stern deity who ensures cosmic moral order.
