Water Babies
Water babies are small, crying beings of Great Basin and Plateau tradition, known among the Southern Paiute as pit-u-u and to other nations by related names. They guard springs, rivers, and lakes; some traditions say they are ghosts of infants who died in a famine, while others know them as spirit guardians who help shamans. Their weeping warns the unwary away from dangerous water.
