Wendigo

spirit · Canada · North America

The wendigo, also spelled windigo, is the cannibal spirit of the Algonquian-speaking peoples, from the Cree and Ojibwe of Canada to the Wampanoag and Pequot of New England. A human possessed by greed and hunger is said to become a gaunt, ice-hearted monster that devours human flesh and never fills its stomach. Scholars read it as a warning against greed and starvation.
