Werewolf
In France the werewolf is the loup-garou, a cursed human who sheds human form at night to run as a wolf, often through a pact with the Devil. Documented in medieval chronicles and the great werewolf trials of the 16th century (the Garnier and Gandillon cases), it was read as demonic shape-shifting. The name passed into English as 'loup-garou' and to French Canada with the settlers.
