Werewolf

shapeshifter · Germany · Germanic

German Werwolf belief peaked 16th–17th centuries, intertwined with witch trials. Peter Stumpp's 1589 execution sparked panic. Bavaria/Austria persecuted Wolfssegen (wolf-charmers) into early 18th century. Transformation via devil's belt or salve, not full moon (later fiction). Capitulatum Episcopi (9th c.) denied physical metamorphosis; folk belief persisted.
