Whale Deity of Aztec

deity · Mexico · Mesoamerica

Not independently attested: the inland Aztecs had no whale deity, and no such figure guards their lakes. The closest monsters are Cipactli, the primeval crocodilian sea-beast from whose body the earth was made (lured with Tezcatlipoca's severed foot), and Tlaltecuhtli, the ravenous earth-lady. Their lake guardians were water gods such as Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue and the doglike Ahuizotl.
