Whale Giant of Cree
Not independently attested in Cree folklore as a giant whale. The Cree of the plains and subarctic woodlands record no whale spirit; their great water-dwelling monster is the Mishipizhiw or Great Lynx, a dangerous being of deep lakes and rivers who drags people underwater. Where a 'whale giant' is imagined, Cree tradition centers on this underwater lynx and the perils of lakes and rapids.
