Wildcat Deity (Maya)
The Maya jaguar deity, the Jaguar God of the Underworld, is the night form of the sun prowling Xibalba with gleaming eyes and a spotted pelt, bearing fire and war onto incense burners and shields. In highland Guatemala the jaguar still guards caves and mountain shrines, and mountain lords are conceived as jaguars, tying the god to the earth and the deep.
