Xibalba
Xibalba, 'place of fright,' is the Maya underworld of the Popol Vuh, ruled by the Lords of Death. Reached through caves, cenotes, or by a river of scorpions, blood, and pus, it is a realm of trial filled with the Houses of Darkness, Knives, Cold, Jaguars, Fire, and Bats. The Hero Twins' descent and escape reveal it as a place both terrible and ultimately conquerable.
