Yasigi (Satimbe)
Yasigi is the female twin of Ogo, the Pale Fox, in Dogon cosmology, and belongs to the oldest generation of beings alongside the Nommo and the Fox. At the first sigi ceremony she acted as an elder, bringing and distributing the beer made by the women; all participants drank it to celebrate the revelation of speech transmitted by Nommo. Yasigi thus became the first dignitary of the sigi, and the female figure on the satimbe mask represents her, holding the calabash that recalls her role at that first ceremony.
