Yei

spirit · United States · North America

Yei (yé'iis) are the Holy People, the spirit deities of Navajo (Diné) tradition who emerged from the underworld to teach humanity. Chiefs among them are Hasjéyalti (Talking God), Hastséhogan (House God), Hastsézĭni the fire god, and Hastséoltoi the huntress; they appear in masked Yei Bi Chei dances and are painted in sandpaintings, each tied to the cardinal directions.
