Yemayá

deity · Cuba · Caribbean

Yemayá is the Yoruba orisha of the sea, motherhood, and fish, brought to Cuba through the transatlantic slave trade. In Santería she owns all waters, governs maternity and fertility, and is syncretized with Our Lady of Regla. She is motherly and protective but destructive when angered, her waters creating rivers and floods.
