Zar
Zar spirits are genuine in Sudanese folk belief: ambivalent supernatural beings who possess individuals and cause illness and misfortune, and who must be appeased through drumming, dance and trance ceremonies. A zar ceremony involves the possessed person, a healer and the audience; spirits have distinct personalities and demand specific colors, perfumes and foods.
