Zar
Zar refers to spirits in the possession cults of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, and the wider Horn of Africa. A zar is believed to possess an individual, causing illness, misfortune, or altered behavior, and is appeased through drumming ceremonies, song, and offerings led by a sheykha or priestess.
