Zmaj

dragon · Kosovo · Balkan

Zmaj is the dragon of South Slavic folklore, including Kosovo, a great serpent or winged, fire-breathing beast dwelling in caves near villages. In Serbian and Kosovan tradition the fiery zmaj is often a guardian of crops who fights storm-demons, though dragons also guard treasure; its presence explains storms and drought. The figure parallels the Bulgarian zmey and Romanian zmeu.
