Sword of Attila
The sword said to have belonged to Attila the Hun is known first from the Roman historian Jordanes, who writes in his Getica that a shepherd found a blade in the ground after cattle had trodden the place bare, and that Attila called it the Sword of Mars, a pledge of world dominion. By the eleventh century a richly decorated sabre was honoured in the Hungarian royal court as the Sword of Attila; the chronicler Lambert of Hersfeld records that Queen Anastasia gave it to Otto, Duke of Bavaria, in 1063.
