Azerbaijani Carpet
The Azerbaijani carpet is the hand-knotted pile rug of Azerbaijan, woven on vertical looms in distinct regional schools - Karabakh, Shirvan, Tabriz, Baku, Gazakh and Ganja among them - each with its own palette, knot and field layout. The traditional repertoire of motifs includes the buta, the dragon, the medallion, the stylised garden and the khoncha offering tray, and the carpets combine rich reds, blues and ivories dyed from madder, indigo and walnut husk.
