Canopic Jar
Canopic jars are the four vessels in which ancient Egyptian embalmers placed the organs removed from the body during mummification, the liver, lungs, stomach and intestines being preserved separately so that the deceased could use them again in the afterlife. The jars, made of alabaster, limestone, wood or pottery, stood in the tomb chest beside the coffin, and by late times each lid was carved as the head of one of the Four Sons of Horus, the protective genii Imsety, Hapy, Duamutef and Qebehsenuef.
