Drotarstvo is the Slovak craft of working iron wire, born in the eighteenth century when travelling drotári from the hills of northern Slovakia walked across Europe mending cracked pottery, glass and pipes with fine wire bindings. What began as tinkering became an art: journeymen and masters built up latticework jugs, birdcages, vases and small household utensils entirely from wire, and the reinforced pots with their neat braided seams were admired as folk masterpieces.
