Fijian War Club
Carved club of the Fijian islands, made from the dense wood of the vesi (ironwood) or Pacific casuarina and shaped in a wide range of named forms: the long-bladed ulato, the throwing club, the bulbous totokia with its blunt striking head, and ceremonial clubs inlaid with shell or whalebone. War clubs were the emblem of the Fijian warrior and badges of rank, carried by chiefs as symbols of office and passed down as named trophies and treasures whose owners' histories were remembered.
