Gleipnir is the third and final fetter with which the gods bound the wolf Fenrir, after the great chains Leyding and Drómi both snapped. It was made by the dwarves from six impossible things: the sound of a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain, a bear's sinews, a fish's breath, and a bird's spittle — which is why, the Edda explains, none of these things now exist in the world.
