Gokstad Ship
A seaworthy Viking-age longship found in a burial mound at Gokstad in Sandefjord, Norway, in 1880. Around 23 meters long with sixteen pairs of oars, it was built for open-sea sailing and held the remains of a chieftain. A full-scale copy, the Viking, crossed the Atlantic to Chicago in 1893, proving its sailing qualities. The original is displayed in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The Gokstad ship's clean, clinker-built lines, deep keel, and tall mast made it the working sea-boat of the Viking age, able to carry a crew across the open ocean and up narrow rivers alike.
