The golden whip of Genghis Khan is the legendary whip that the great conqueror is said to have carried and brandished to rally and reward his warriors, and in some tellings the source of his military genius. One of the most retold stories claims that Genghis Khan rode with a whip made of gold that he used to command his armies, and that its mere sight could turn a retreat into a charge. No such whip survives, and the Secret History of the Mongols does not name it; the golden whip appears instead in later heroic retellings and in the popular narrative that grew around the conqueror's rise. The
