Gram is the great sword of the Völsung heroes, first owned by Sigmund and later reforged for his son Sigurðr, the slayer of the dragon Fáfnir. The sword enters the story when Odin, disguised as a wanderer, thrusts it into the great tree Branstock in the hall of King Völsung, declaring that the one who draws it shall have it as a gift; only Sigmund could pull the blade free. When the sword broke in battle, the shards were kept and re-forged by the smith Regin, and Sigurðr proved the new blade by laying it on the anvil and cleaving it in two before using it to kill Fáfnir.
