Grotte Mill
The great hand-mill owned by King Fróði, which ground out gold, peace, and abundance. In the Eddic poem Grottasöngr the giantesses Fenja and Menja were forced to turn it until they raised an army; carried aboard a ship, the mill then ground salt until it sank, and so the sea became salt. The same wonder-mill lies at the heart of the Swedish folktale 'Why the Sea Is Salt'. The mill was named Grotti, and it had been quarried from a mountain together with two giant-women who alone had the strength to turn it; King Fróði kept them at the work night and day, and in their grinding song they at last
