Gungnir
Gungnir, 'the swaying one', is the spear of Odin, the All-Father, forged by the dwarven sons of Ivaldi in the same contest of treasures that gave the gods their greatest gifts. In the Prose Edda the spear is listed as one of the three marvels the sons of Ivaldi made — the others being Skíðblaðnir and Sif's golden hair. The All-Father opened the war between the Æsir and the Vanir by hurling Gungnir over the enemy host, and that gesture of casting a spear at the start of a battle became the archetype for the practice in Old Norse and later Germanic warfare.
