Herati Carpet
The herati carpet is a hand-knotted wool carpet of the Herat region of western Afghanistan, woven with repeating medallion, star and floral patterns that have been exported from the city for centuries. The trade flourished under the Timurid court, when Herat was a centre of craft and patronage, and the rug's patterns are still carried by weaving families who pass the designs from one generation to the next. The name herati is also attached in the rug trade to a pattern with a central diamond, hooked leaves and corner motifs, and the same terms cause lasting confusion with the rugs of Heriz in
