Hermes’ Sandals
The talaria, the winged sandals of Hermes, the messenger of the gods in Greek myth, carry the wearer swift as the wind across land and sea and between the realms of mortals and gods; Homer already knows them, and in the Iliad Hermes ties on his 'ambrosial, golden' sandals before his errands. In later art the sandals are always shown with small wings at the ankles, and together with the winged cap and the caduceus they make up the messenger god's badge.
