Járngreipr, the 'iron grippers', are the iron gloves of the thunder god Thor, named in the Prose Edda as one of his three great treasures beside Mjölnir and the belt Megingjörð. Their purpose is practical as much as martial: the shaft of Mjölnir is said to grow white-hot in flight, and only the iron gloves let Thor catch and hurl the hammer without burning his hands. In the tale of Thor's visit to the giant Geirröðr, gloves of the same kind are what allow the god to catch the red-hot lump of molten iron that the giant throws at him, which Thor hurls back to kill Geirröðr.
