Karagöz, the shadow puppet of Ottoman Turkish theatre, gives its name to the traditional play performed behind a lit cotton screen with flat, articulated figures of dyed translucent camel hide worked on sticks, which cast coloured shadows as the single puppeteer, the hayali, moves them.
