Kelaghayi (Azerbaijani Silk Headscarf)
The kelaghayi is the square silk headscarf of Azerbaijani women, woven on narrow silk looms in the town of Sheki and the village of Basgal, then dyed and printed with woodblocks so that a patterned border frames a plainer field. The classic ornament is the buta, the curved teardrop or flame motif that runs along the edge, and the colours carry meaning: white and light shades for older women and mourning, red and bright colours for brides and young women.
