Kente Cloth
Kente is the strip-woven cloth of the Asante and Ewe peoples of Ghana, built up from narrow bands of silk and cotton woven on narrow looms and sewn edge to edge into bold geometric patterns, each of which has a name and a proverb meaning. Weaving was traditionally a male craft tied to the royal court, and particular patterns were reserved for the king; the colors carry their own language, with gold for royalty, green for growth, red for passion or danger, and the cloth is worn for the great occasions of Akan life.
