Kihnu Woolen Skirt
The striped woolen skirt and knitted garments of Kihnu Island's women: bright red, green and blue striped cloth woven on home looms from local wool, worn with embroidered blouses, sashes, mittens and stockings whose colours and patterns recall old legends. With the island's men long at sea, Kihnu's women carried the culture of the island, and the making of these garments — together with the songs, dances and handicraft skills of the Kihnu cultural space inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 — became an emblem of Estonian island identity.
