Maasai Nborr Collar

The nborr is the flat beaded collar worn by Maasai women and, on ceremonial occasions, by young men (moran) of Kenya and Tanzania. Built on a base of hide or wire and covered with dense rows of tiny glass beads, the collar forms a broad crescent that lies across the chest and shoulders. The colour combinations are not arbitrary: red stands for the cattle that are the heart of Maasai life, white for milk and peace, and the patterns signal the age-set, clan, and status of the wearer.
