Matyó Embroidery
Matyó embroidery is the flamboyant floral needlework of the Hungarian town of Mezőkövesd and its surrounding villages, where from about the 1860s women stitched huge roses, tulips and pansies in red, blue and green silk thread on white linen. The style covered festive women's costume, shirts, aprons, pillowcases, tablecloths and wall hangings, and the bold single blooms grew ever larger as the local Matyó identity took shape at the turn of the twentieth century.
