Medicine Wheel
The medicine wheel is a circle of stones laid out on high plains ground with lines of stones radiating from the centre like spokes, read by Plains peoples as a sacred map of the cosmos, the four directions, the seasons and the circle of life. The most celebrated example, the Bighorn Medicine Wheel in Wyoming, measures some 23 metres across and has 28 spokes, and studies have suggested its outer cairns may align with the summer solstice and stars, though the precise purpose of the old sites remains debated.
