The mistletoe shaft with which the blind god Höðr, guided by Loki, slew Baldr the beloved. Only the mistletoe had not sworn to spare him, and Loki fetched it, fashioned it into a dart, and guided Höðr's hand. The killing of Baldr by the mistletoe spear set the doom of the gods in motion and stands at the centre of the Eddic tragedy. When Frigg had taken oaths from all things not to harm her son, she overlooked the young mistletoe as too small and weak to ask; Loki made the dart from that very plant and gave it to the blind god to throw in sport.
